Fr Jason Jones from the Sacred Heart parish in Morriston, Swansea welcomed CAFOD supporters and parishioners on Friday 11 November for the Memorial Mass for the Menevia diocese.
Therese Warwick, representing CAFOD in Menevia, thanked Fr Jason for the celebrating Mass and giving thanks for all those who have touched our lives but are no longer with us.
The work of CAFOD is only possible thanks to the wonderful support and dedication of our friends. Since our earliest days, we’ve been blessed by their commitment and compassion. But it is a sad fact of life that over the years we have had to say goodbye to a number of those people who were such an important part of our mission.
“All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.” St Francis of Assisi
But we continue to be very grateful for all the different ways that our supporters over the years have contributed to our work. Their donations, campaigning, volunteering and other acts of solidarity have enabled us to help communities around the world build a better future for themselves and their families.
Memorial Masses in dioceses around England and Wales have been celebrated for ten years and there is an annual, open invitation to join us in remembering fellow CAFOD supporters or those who have been close to us.
At CAFOD we often speak to families who have chosen to support our work in memory of a relative or friend.
Just as we light a candle for someone we’ve loved and lost, creating a Candelight Fund in their name is a wonderful way to keep their spirit and values alive.
By making such a special gift, families, neighbours, colleagues or pupils feel they are remembering their loved ones in a positive, far-reaching and life-changing way.
Many families find comfort and hope in knowing that their loved one’s memory lives on in our work and in the lives of those who are helped by their gifts.
A Candelight Fund allows us to create a personal tribute to a loved one while also supporting CAFOD’s work around the world.
The monies raised through Candelight Funds offer emergency aid to communities devastated by conflict or natural disasters; and provide water, healthcare, education, tools, training and support to families who are working to escape poverty and give their children a brighter future.
For us at CAFOD, it is truly humbling and a great honour to help families commemorate someone special. By celebrating one special life, you’ll be touching many more around the world.
Menevia’s Book of Remembrance is updated every year and was presented at the offertory procession at The Sacred Heart Parish in Morriston and Fr Jason gave a reflective homily encompassing the Holy Year of Mercy and all the works that had been done to celebrate the Jubilee. Special prayers of intercession were read and beautiful hymns chosen.
The Book is remaining at the Sacred Heart parish until the end of November.

St John of the Cross said: “In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone.”
We give thanks and pray that those who have gone before us, those who have taught us to love and be loved, will rest in peace, in the light and love of our risen Lord.
