Blessed Oscar Romero, due to be canonised in October, was one of the most remarkable figures of the 20th Century. In preparation for his canonisation we are delighted to welcome speaker Clare Dixon, who has an incredible insight and knowledge of Romero’s legacy through her work and close ties with communities in Latin America.

As head of CAFOD’s Latin American team for nearly 40 years, Clare has a rich first hand experience of what Romero’s life and witness means to the people of El Salvador, even today. The reason that many Catholics around the world, continue to hold Romero in such high regard was because he did not simply talk about the need to love your neighbour, but courageously denounced the violence and named the injustices that plagued his country. He reminded us that Christ is found in people living in poverty, and that we cannot ignore the suffering of our brothers and sisters in need. Romero remains a source of strength and encouragement.
Kieran O’Brien, coordinator for CAFOD South Wales said,
“Romero remains a huge inspiration for me in my work. His speaking up on issues of justice, peace and reconciliation was the act of being a pastor, guiding his community during the troubles his country were facing at the time.
His willingness to seek out the stories of the poorest members of his community, to document their disappearances and acts of violence was the act of being a prophet, speaking truth to power. And using the privilege of his position as Archbishop to be a voice for the voiceless, was the act of being a Bishop, using his voice for those who had no voice.
And his willingness to stand by his message even though he knew it would cost him his life, was his act of martyrdom. He truly gave his life to his people and that is why his witness remains so important for the Church and our world today.”
Here is a short piece of Clare talking about the announcement of Romero’s beatification.
