God has entrusted the care of Creation to us.
Pope Francis, in Laudato Si‘ describes how our beautiful planet has been despoiled and exploited for profit. We all need to value Creation.
“We need a conversation which includes
everyone, since the environmental
challenge we are undergoing, and its
human roots, concern and affect us all.”
Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ #14
“Creation is the order of love. God’s love is the fundamental moving force in all created things.” Laudato Si #77
There will also be an opportunity to sign a petition to the Prime Minister regarding Britain committing to net zero emissions by 2050. Here is the wording:
“To avoid the worst effects of climate change, we must limit global temperature rise to 1.5C. Going above 1.5C warming could multiply hunger, migration and conflict. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions to ‘net zero’ as soon as possible is the best way to do this. Net zero will mean Britain no longer contributes to climate change.
The UK government has announced that it will commit in law a by-2050 net zero emissions target. We now need ambitious and urgent policies to make this announcement a reality.
The petition asks:
Prime Minister, will you act quickly to ensure:
- All government departments urgently bring forward policies to achieve net zero emissions. And go further, faster to achieve net zero emissions honestly, transparently and without caveats by 2045.
- UK investment overseas and at home is consistent with keeping the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees. This should include stopping all new public support for fossil fuels overseas.
- The UK shows leadership by connecting the crises of poverty, environmental degradation and climate change, and makes concrete commitments to combat them at key international events.
If you can’t attend this event, please do consider signing the petition online.
