Giving alms, Jesus teaches us, means making the needs of others our own.  In his message for Lent, Pope Francis said that:

 “Lent is a favourable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognising in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day.”

For CAFOD’s Lenten appeal, the parish of Our Lady, Star of the Sea in Mumbles hosted a tasty soup and bread lunch which was provided by the ladies of the parish.

Swansea Catholics join Lent Appeal

Catholics the length and breadth of South Wales have been fundraising to raise money for CAFOD’s Lent Appeal. From school fundraisers to Lent Lunches, different events have been taking place to ensure that the taps are turned on across the world this Lent.  

We here in the CAFOD South Wales office have been lucky enough to attend some of these events and we have had a great time. Last weekend saw many Lent Lunches taking place and Helen McSherry, CAFOD Community Participation Co-ordinator attended one such event in Swansea.

Porthcawl Catholics fundraise for Fast Day

Friday marked CAFOD’s Lent Fast Day, a tradition that started in the 1960s and for which support has continued to grow. I, like many others, used the Fast Day as a time of reflection, and fundraising to help those in need.

This year the Lent appeal is focused on providing clean and safe water across the world. Yet, the work goes further than simply providing the means to get water. It also involves education about sanitation and practical training meaning that if the water pumps need maintaining, they will have the knowledge to fix the problem themselves. Continue reading
